From his first Hollywood moment to his new Netflix series
Three days after moving to Los Angeles in 2008, Austin, Texas-bred actor Glen Powell had his first official Hollywood moment when he found himself at a dinner, seated serendipitously next to one of his heroes: Dustin Hoffman. “And he was like, ‘Hey, you look familiar,’” recounts Powell, 28. Hoffman had seen the actor in one of his earliest films, Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters, and been impressed. “[Hoffman] is one of my favorite actors of all time, and I was like, ‘Yeah, you too man,’” he says. Soon after, reality hit. “The stakes of the town are quickly shoved upon you, and you realize it’s tough,” continues Powell, now a resident of Beachwood Canyon. Eventually, in 2016, he landed Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! and a role as astronaut John Glenn in the Oscar-nominated drama Hidden Figures. Next, Powell stars opposite Nicholas Hoult in Netflix’s April release, Sand Castle, a war drama for which he underwent intense military training with the Jordanian special forces. “All of a sudden, you get somebody who believes in you—and slowly but surely you get to start choosing roles,” explains Powell, who is currently in London filming the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society alongside Lily James. “That’s the nice part lately. I’m getting to sit back and go, ‘Oh, let’s do good movies.’”
